Big Savage Tunnel Closed for Winter November 30

GAP Mile 22 | Reported on | Last Updated:

Somerset County closed the Big Savage Tunnel for the winter season on Thursday, November 30. This seasonal closure, performed annually, protects the lining of the tunnel from freeze-thaw cycles brought on by high winds, cold temperatures, and wet, snowy conditions at high elevation. Please note that there is no detour, and local roads are narrow and treacherous. Please plan your winter excursions elsewhere on the GAP. The tunnel will reopen by early April, once snow has melted and temperatures are steadily rising. A specific date will be posted on this website once it is selected.
